چکیده

Non Destructive Testing applied to railway axles is performed both in production and in maintenance. During production, NDT is carried out at different stages adopting different techniques, while during maintenance (in-service inspection) only ultrasonic testing is usually carried out. The present paper is focused on some aspects of calibration related to the in-service inspection of railway axles by means of ultrasonic NDT. In particular, applied standards request to calibrate sensitivity on suitable reference blocks provided with notches. In order to investigate the performance of these notches in respect to real cracks, the echoes coming from fatigue cracks generated onto hollow axles made in A4T steel by means of a dedicated test bench have been compared with those detected from suitable reference blocks. The results suggest some clues for designing effective sample blocks for railway axles.

Ultrasonic Flaw Detection Systems for Testing Rails in Iran Railways (RAI)

To have a safe and reliable railway system, nondestructive testing (NDT) methods are necessary to be implemented in order to avoid catastrophic failures. NDT methods also provide a powerful tool for proper maintenance of valuable railway system assets. Among various NDT methods, ultrasonic testing (UT) along with magnetic particle testing (MPT) and eddy current testing (ECT) play significant ro...

Numerical Comparison of Pavement Distress Due to Moving Load under Dual-wheel Tandem and Tridem Axles

Finite element method in pavement analysis is a type of mechanistic analysis that has widely been used by road and transportation engineers these days. This method is used with related programs such as ABAQUS/CAE which is one of the powerful software on this task. Modeling in this software has been developed from 2D static models to 3D dynamic models which are closer to reality due to the more ...

CHARACTERIZATION OF TRANSVERSE CRACK AND CRACK GROWTH IN A RAILWAY RAIL

Abstract: To ensure the rail transportations safety, evaluation of fatigue behavior of the rail steel is necessary. High cycle fatigue behaviour of a rail steel was the subject of investigation in this research using fracture mechanics. Finite element method (FEM) was used for analyzing the distribution of the stresses on the rail, exerted by the external load. FEM analysis showed that the ...

Automatic Detection and Localization of Surface Cracks in Continuously Cast Hot Steel Slabs Using Digital Image Analysis Techniques

Quality inspection is an indispensable part of modern industrial manufacturing. Steel as a major industry requires constant surveillance and supervision through its various stages of production. Continuous casting is a critical step in the steel manufacturing process in which molten steel is solidified into a semi-finished product called slab. Once the slab is released from the casting unit, th...
